Biography:

Syed Bahauddin Alam is currently a PhD candidate in Nuclear Engineering at the University of Cambridge. He is working on Computational Design Group of  Cambridge Engineering Design Centre under Academic Division: Energy, Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery at Department of Engineering

He completed his Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Nuclear Energy from University of Cambridge at 2013. His completed his B.Sc. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering (EEE)  from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) at 2011.

His PhD research topic is "The Design The Design of Reactor Cores for Civil Nuclear Marine propulsion". He is currently working at the Rhode Island Nuclear Science Center (RINSC) in collaboration with the Brown University (Advanced Ceramics and Nanomaterials Laboratory) and the University of Rhode Island (Dynamic Photomechanics Laboratory) on the "Oxidation Behavior of Accident Tolerant Cladding Silicon Carbide in a Pure Steam Environment.

 

Awards:

  1. During Syed's PhD study, he has been awarded "Best Student Paper Award" and  "Best Poster Awardat the 2016 International Congress on Advances in Nuclear Power Plants (ICAPP 2016) in San Francisco, CA, USA. 
  2. Furthermore, he has been awarded "Best Technical Poster Award" by "American Nuclear Society (ANS)" out of 677 papers at the 16th International Topical Meeting on Nuclear Reactor Thermal Hydraulics (NURETH-16) in Chicago, USA for a part of his PhD work. 
  3. He has also been awarded "Student Participation Assistance Award" sponsored by Reactor Physics Division of American Nuclear Society (ANS) at the Physics of Reactors (PHYSOR) in Sun Valley, Idaho.
  4. In addition, he is the recipient of "IET Travel Award 2016", "ICAPP 2016 Student Travel Scholarship", "W G Collins Endowment Fund 2016", "Ford of Britain Trust 2015" and "St. Edmunds College Tutorial Award 2015" for his PhD Work.

In his undergraduate level, he was the recipient of "Outstanding Research Award'2011" in "EEE Undergraduate Project Workshop (EUProW 2011) organized by Department of EEE, BUET. Furthermore, he received "Rotary Vocational Excellence Award’ 2011" for outstanding contribution in the field of science and technology in Bangladesh.  Moreover, he has published highest numbers of International peer-reviewed research publications at the undergraduate level in Bangladesh.

Research:

His current research is to design the high power density and a soluble-boron-free advanced small modular reactor (SMR) core utilising advanced accident tolerant cladding material Silicon Carbide (SiC) for civil marine propulsion system using novel Thorium-based fuel. Generally, he is interested in:

  • Monte Carlo and Deterministic methods for reactor physics analysis;
  • Modeling techniques and design of advanced small modular reactor core;
  • Thermal-hydraulics safety analysis;
  • Fuel performance analysis;
  • Nuclear fuel cycle optimization;
  • Advanced cladding material;
  • Accident tolerant fuel.
