ESRC Collaborative postdoctoral research projects in the social sciences - deadline 11 April

The University of Cambridge has received funding from ESRC for ‘Transforming Social Sciences’. This award includes a strand for the support of collaborative postdoctoral research projects in the social sciences.

Postdoctoral researchers are invited to jointly submit collaborative proposals for funding of up to £4,000 and up to 12 months with a focus on social science projects aimed at theoretical and methodological innovation.

For the purpose of this call, postdoctoral researchers include Junior Research Fellows and Research Associates.

 Criteria

Applicants must have a contract of employment as a postdoctoral researcher in place for the duration of the proposed project. Applicants on 100% project-based contracts must consult their PI before submitting an application, to ensure that the proposed project is consistent with the terms of their substantive employment.

Projects with interdisciplinary focus and/or that engage with University Strategic Research Initiatives or Networks are preferred. For a list of Strategic Research Initiatives and Networks please click on the following link: http://www.cam.ac.uk/research/research-at-cambridge/strategic-research-initiatives-networks.

Applicants can seek mentoring by a senior academic researcher for the conduct of their research.

Content

Funding can be sought for direct costs (including research assistance) to support pilot or experimental research, support for fieldwork, archival access etc. Grants are not intended to support interchange between researchers where there is no planned programme of activity to meet a clearly specified research objective (dissemination of results of research conducted under the aegis of the project for which funding is sought is a permitted purpose, but applications purely to organise an international conference, whether held in the UK or overseas will not be considered); nor are grants intended solely to support attendance at open conferences organised by a third party or international organisation.

Selection

Successful projects will address the following criteria:

  • Pioneering theoretical and methodological innovation
  • Likely to generate enduring network or collaboration
  • Demonstrable links with existing SRI (with evidence of endorsement – if applicable)
  • Preferably, an established researcher identified as mentor

Application

Please note that the application process is online-only; applications, including a project proposal and two external references, are to be submitted online at https://webservices.admin.cam.ac.uk/cbk/gaff/index.cgi by close of business on 11 April 2014. Other application formats, or late applications, will not be accepted.
