The British Antarctic Survey (BAS), an institute of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), delivers and enables world-leading interdisciplinary research in the Polar Regions. The skilled science and support staff based in Cambridge, Antarctica and the Arctic, work together to deliver research in the Polar Regions to advance our understanding of Earth and our impact on it. BAS has recently commissioned a £200M New Polar Research Vessel (NPRV) which will enter service in 2019. This is the chief catalyst for BAS embarking on the delivery of a series of projects, all with a strong focus on reducing environmental impact, that will transform the way we conduct our business.

Sectors of Interest to British Antarctic Survey:
BAS have a number of interest areas in which Cambridge Cleantech members may have expertise:

Improving environmental performance across the BAS estate
BAS facilities include a number of research stations in Antarctica and an office building in Cambridge.  We are interested in, amongst others:

  • Renewable and low Carbon power generation – All will be considered for adaptation.
  • Energy Management – e.g. monitoring, load shedding, ‘smart’ controls, etc.
  • Sewage treatment – Reduced energy/water consumption, energy from waste, etc.
  • Water treatment – Energy/water efficiency, forward osmosis, etc.
  • Buildings and services – Efficient construction materials, lighting, heating, water fittings, pumping & refrigeration.
  • Low energy vehicles and mobile plant in extreme environments.
  • Life Cycle Analysis of our activities.

Remote data collection
BAS undertakes many of its scientific activities using remote autonomous instruments, these often rely on environmental power generation and battery storage, in many cases this equipment is deployed by air so system weight is critical. Areas of interest include:

  • Power saving methodologies and technologies.
  • Power generation and storage.
