The Alan Turing Institute – Energy Summit

On 21 March The Alan Turing Institute (ATI) Energy Summit took place in Murray Edwards College. The objective was to highlight the requirements, challenges, and opportunities of data science applications for the energy sector. The Energy Summit invited the users (or potential users) of the ATI from industry, government and various stakeholder groups to discuss the challenges they are encountering in the energy sector in dealing with big data and diverse datasets, and discuss potential areas where the work of the ATI could have a high impact on the energy sector. Representatives from ATI Joint Venture Partners from the Universities of Cambridge, Edinburgh, Oxford, Warwick and UCL were in attendance.

Following a welcome by Professor Chris Abell, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research, University of Cambridge, the ATI Energy Summit began with a keynote address by the Institute Director Professor Andrew Blake, followed by panel and open discussions led by energy sector representatives from government, energy trade associations and industry.

Professor Lynn Gladden, Chair of Energy@Cambridge, chaired a session on Energy and Measurement with panel members Caroline Acton, Met Office, Marieke Beckmann, National Physical Laboratory, Mark Foster, BP, Detlef Hohl, Shell and Walt Aldred, Schlumberger.

In the afternoon there were sessions covering Energy Systems chaired by Professor Ruchi Choudhary University of Cambridge, with panel speakers John Batterbee, Energy Systems Catapult, Peter Davies, Uniper and Yoav Zingher, Kiwi Power, and Energy Policy chaired by Dr Rupert Wilmouth, Government Office for Science and speakers Martin Crouch, Ofgem, Rosie McGlynn, Energy UK and Ian Llewellyn, Department of Energy and Climate Change.
