You are invited to an initial meeting on Thursday 26 May 2016 from 09:30 – 14:00 to discuss a new collaborative research activity coordinated by the Cambridge Big Data and Energy@Cambridge Strategic Research Initiatives  – ‘Algorithms and Systems for Energy Efficient Computing’.

Meeting date: 26th May 2016, 09:30 – 14:00

Location: FW26, Computer Laboratory, JJ Thomson Avenue, Cambridge (map)

Background

The Cambridge Big Data Strategic Research Initiative supports interdisciplinary research collaboration by bringing together researchers to address large scale multidisciplinary research challenges. One such challenge area is Algorithms and Systems for Energy Efficient Computing.

The rapid development of the IT sector, particularly in the area of data-intensive technologies has come at a cost of growing energy demand, with the whole IT ecosystem estimated to consume around 10% of current global electricity demand. While major advances have been achieved in low energy data collection, networking and processing, much of this work has to date been specific to its own silo, without a holistic view of power consumption across the technology stack. There is significant expertise at Cambridge in many aspects of research aimed at reducing the power consumption of such technologies, and the Algorithms and Systems initiative is aimed at bringing this group together to develop a case for large-scale research funding in this area.

The Algorithms and Systems challenge is aimed at three aspects: Algorithms constrained for energy efficiency; Novel energy-efficient architectures for Big Data challenges; System design, data management and programming models. Please note that this activity is intended to be complementary to the Energy@Cambridge Grand Challenge in Materials for Energy Efficient ICT – researchers involved in that initiative are warmly invited to participate in the design of the Algorithms and Systems programme.

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Identify a small number of priority areas where we believe that there is potential to achieve tangible and substantive progress and add real value by working together. This will focus on identifying the key science challenges that the programme will address.
  • Develop a roadmap or action plan that sets out what resources are required (capital and human) to support the activity.
  • Articulate a clear and compelling vision that can be communicated to potential sponsors.

Attending the meeting and/or registering your interest

If you are attending the meeting or want to register your interest, please submit 1 PowerPoint slide per theme:

  1. Algorithms constrained for energy efficiency
  2. Novel energy-efficient architectures for Big Data challenges
  3. System design, data management and programming models

The single slide should cover what you are currently doing in this space.

Please submit the slides using the online form: https://www.bigdata.cam.ac.uk/research/projects/energy-efficient-computing/registration-form (Raven login required).

Slides should be submitted no later than Thursday 19th May 2016. You can submit 1 slide for each theme, please clearly identify the theme you are addressing in the slide.
