About
What would you build if you had unlimited materials and could build anything without running out of supplies? In reality, we don’t live in a world with unlimited materials. There are limits to the number of trees we can cut down without harming ecosystems, the amount of land available for growing trees and other resources that go into making buildings. Reusing materials is an important part of sustainable design and engineering.
This activity, hosted by the Future Infrastructure and Built Environment Centre for Doctoral Training (https://www.fibe-cdt.eng.cam.ac.uk/), is a hands-on exploration of material reuse and design for disassembly. Participants will be given a kit of laser-cut wooden pieces that can be assembled to make a house, but can also be taken apart and rearranged to become a bridge. Activity leaders will engage them in discussion about the features of the kit that lend it to flexible design and reuse.
