Speaker: Dr Jan Rosenow, Principal and European Programme Director, RAP, on “The heroes of the energy transition: zero carbon electricity, electrification and energy efficiency”.

Achieving net zero climate goals will require unprecedented changes to the way we produce, distribute and use energy. Fundamentally, it will require the complete decarbonisation of the power sector already in the next decade. Modelling shows consistently that electricity will need to provide about half of global energy demand compared to currently less than 25%. To make this happen end-uses currently relying on the combustion of fossil fuels need to be replaced with electric alternatives such as heat pumps and electric vehicles. Electrification will result in significant energy savings across the economy, a point underappreciated in the debate around the energy transition. Further energy efficiency improvements on the demand side can reduce the overall costs of the energy system but also provide wider energy-system and societal benefits. In this talk, Dr Jan Rosenow will provide a high-level perspective on the key levers available to drive decarbonisation further and faster.
