Energy Transitions Research at the University of Cambridge

    The International Energy Agency (IEA) with the sponsorship of the British High Commission, in partnership with NITI Aayog and The Center for Study of Science, Technology and Policy (CSTEP) invites you to the Karnataka Power System Transformation Workshop. The event aims to inform the government of Karnataka’s actions for integrating solar and wind into its electricity system highlighting what Karnataka can learn from the international experiences, and what other regions around the world can learn from Karnataka. The workshop will provide a platform for local and international experts to share ideas and identify key recommendations for power system planning, operation and flexibility in order to integrate increasing shares of variable renewable energy successfully.
    This workshop is the third of the series of three workshops supported through the IEA’s Clean Energy Transitions Programme (CETP), with particular thanks to the contribution of the United Kingdom Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO).

    Speaker: Monica Giuletti (Loughborough University)

    Monica Giulietti is Professor of Microeconomics and Head of the Economics Discipline Group at the School of Business and Economics, Loughborough University.

    She is an associate fellow of the Energy Policy Research Group, Cambridge University and of the Centre for Competition Policy, University of East Anglia. She is a research fellow of the Centre on Regulation in Europe (CERRE). She has been a member of Department of Energy and Climate Change panel of technical experts for the Electricity Market Reform.

    Before joining Loughborough she has worked at the Universities of Warwick, Nottingham, Aston and Exeter. Her research focuses on competition and regulation in wholesale and retail energy markets, energy consumers’ behaviour and business models for decentralised energy storage.

    She has conducted research for the Department of Energy and Climate Change, the Energy Retail Association, Platts and Western Power Distribution and has received funding from the ESRC, EPSRC, UKERC and the Levehulme Trust. Her research has been published in international peer- reviewed journals such as the Economic Journal, Journal of Business and Economic Statistics, Journal of Industrial Economics, Oxford Economic Papers, Energy Journal, Energy Economics and Energy Policy.

    Speaker: Professor Nigel Brandon (Imperial College London)

    Prof Nigel Brandon OBE FREng is Dean of Engineering and Chair of Sustainable Development in Energy at Imperial College London. His research is focused on electrochemical devices for low carbon energy applications, with a particular focus on fuel cells, electrolysers, and batteries.

    He is Director of the UK Hydrogen and Fuel Cells SUPERGEN Hub, and Chair of Imperial's Sustainable Gas Institute. He is a founder of Ceres Power, an AIM listed fuel cell company spun out from Imperial College in 2000, a founder and Director of RFC Power, a flow battery company spun out from Imperial College in 2018, and a Partner in Galvanic Energy, which offers specialist Consultancy services in the electrochemical technology space (

    Speaker: Tony Roulstone (Cambridge University)

    After reading Engineering at King’s College Cambridge, he joined the UK Atomic Energy Authority to work on fast reactor systems. He was involved at Rolls-Royce for ten years in the design of the PWR-2 reactor systems in the Vanguard class submarines, and later as Engineering Director was responsible for the engineering teams for all UK nuclear submarines. He has had senior roles in the Aerospace section of Rolls-Royce and has consulted for blue-chip engineering and IT service companies.

    Tony is a Lecturer in Nuclear Energy. He returned to Cambridge in 2010 as the first Course Director for the MPhil in Nuclear Energy. He is Fellow of IMechE and a Member of the IET.

    Speaker:Professor Philip Steadman, Bartlett School of Energy, Environment and Resources, University College London

    Philip Steadman works primarily on the use of energy in buildings with special emphasis on the non-domestic stock, and has led three recent EPSRC-funded projects on this subject: Building and Energy Data Frameworks, New Empirically-Based Models of Energy Use in the Building Stock, and High-Rise Buildings, Energy and Density. This work has continued in the UCL Energy Institute's Centre for Energy Epidemiology and Centre for Research in Energy Demand Solutions.

    In 2019 he developed with colleagues the London Building Stock Model, a digital model of all buildings in the metropolis and their use of energy, for the Greater London Authority. In the past he has worked on the relationship of energy use to patterns of land uses and transport networks in cities. He was a partner in the PROPOLIS project funded by the EC, whose purpose was to compare European cities in terms of their sustainability.
