The Henry Royce Institute for advanced materials will be hosting the Materials for the Energy Transition Roadmap Webinar on 15th June 2020 in collaboration with the Institute of Physics (IOP).

The UK has become the first major economy in the world to pass a net-zero emissions law, setting an ambitious target to bring all greenhouse gas emissions to net-zero by 2050 (as recommended by the Committee on Climate Change’s (CCC) 2019 Report). The development and adoption of more energy-efficient materials is an important enabler for the UK to achieve this goal.

In 2019, the Royce community identified four key areas in the CCC Report where materials science research is critical to enabling greenhouse gas reduction:

  1. Future of materials for low-carbon methods of hydrogen generation
  2. The future of materials in photovoltaic systems
  3. New materials for heat exchange systems (thermoelectric and caloric)
  4. Low-loss electronics

The UK materials community, coordinated by Royce in collaboration with IOP and facilitated by the Institute for Manufacturing has come together to develop roadmaps on these four key areas to outline opportunities for materials science to contribute to the net-zero-carbon by 2050 target.

The sessions will include the Plenary Session:

Chaired by Professor Manish Chhowalla, University of Cambridge

Professor Clare Grey, University of Cambridge
Professor Jenny Nelson, Imperial College London
Professor Nora de Leeuw, University of Leeds
Professor Stuart Parkin, Max Planck Halle, Germany

Key registration deadline: 12 June 2020
