The UK Government's overriding priorities with regards to energy policy are to deliver secure, reliable, clean, affordable energy. Delivering on these priorities presents policy-makers in Government with a ‘trilemma’: how can the UK decarbonise its energy system to meet the legally binding targets under the Climate Change Act and international commitments, whilst ensuring both security of supply and that energy is affordable for consumers?

In an event instigated by Professor Mike Bradshaw, UKERC Researcher, & Professor of Global Energy, University of Warwick, panellists will consider how we 'rescale' the UK's energy system and address the energy trilemma in the light of recent developments such as the policy reset and the Brexit vote.

The panellists' contributions will move delegates through different scales over the course of the discussion: from the global to a European scale and to the scale of the UK energy system, including the devolved nations of the UK, and to the level of community energy generation as a growing contributor to the UK’s energy mix.

Chair: Dr Damian Carrington, Head of Environment, The Guardian and The Observer

Panel:

  • Joseph Dutton, UKERC Researcher, & Associate Research Fellow in the  Energy Policy Group, University of Exeter
  • Joan MacNaughton CB, Member, UKERC Advisory Board, & Executive Chair, World Energy Trilemma for the World Energy Council
