The EPSRC Centre of Advanced Materials for Integrated Energy Systems (CAM-IES) invited PhD students and postdoctoral researchers to present their recent results at the CAM-IES Autumn Symposium, which was held at the Blizard Institute on the Queen Mary University of London (QMUL) campus on 21 September 2017, and attended by around eighty early-career delegates. The symposium was organised by Dr Christian Nielsen (QMUL) and Dr Hugo Bronstein (UCL) as part of a series of networking events run by the Centre, led by Professor Clare Grey at the University of Cambridge. The Symposium provided a networking opportunity for students and postdoctoral staff from all over the UK to meet, disseminate data and discuss with their peers about a range of energy materials research topics including batteries, fuel cells, thermoelectric energy harvesting and photovoltaics. The symposium consisted of three plenary lectures from world-leading experts in low-carbon energy generation and storage, Dr Jenny Clake (University of Sheffield), Dr Oliver Fenwick (QMUL) and Dr Paul Shearing (UCL), as well as twelve contributed talks and poster presentations from PhD students and postdoctoral researchers. The Centre offered travel bursaries to delegates attending from outside of London; students travelling on bursaries were very happy for the opportunity to talk about their work and develop potential collaborations with others in the field.
